Songs That I'm Embarrass To Admit That I Like - Part 1

Oh c'mon! I'm sure you have those songs that you are too embarrass to admit that you either like or listen to in secret!

I will say even though I'm embarrass by it, that I have quite a list of tunes that I kinda like, but won't admit to it. But since we are all here among strangers (😁), I will say it here. I intend to do this as a series, so this is only Part 1 of this whole torture.

The first one that I will be more than embarrass to admit that I used to groove to is this disco tune from the 70's (that's 1970's for you millennials) by Lime called "Your Love".

 

Look, it's silly, it's downright hokey, the lyrics are forgettable.... but damn it, I found the hook "Your love, your love is never changing..... Your love, your love is always rising...." catchy like hell when I first heard it (as a teenager). And of course, when it was played loud on the dance floor, who gave a damn about the silly and simplistic lyrics?

Now that I'm a respected adult and have a more refined taste in things, I don't listen to this tune that much. But yes, it is on my iTunes list. I paid $0.99 for it way back then. And every now and then, I do crank it up loud on my Marshall bluetooth speaker and reminisce about my long-lost youth.

In their tribute to the passing of Aretha Franklin, Fox news superimposed a picture of Patti LaBelle by mistake.

You don't have to do this anymore, Fox News. I am already convinced of your clumsy, inept ability.

Could "Schikaneder" Be The Next Must-See Broadway Show?

Right now, it is all about "Hamilton". But in a couple of years, could it be "Schikaneder" next? The latest musical by "Wicked" composer Stephen Schwartz is making waves in, of all places, Vienna, Austria.

Here’s a tip for Broadway’s theater owners: Get yourselves to Vienna to see the new musical by “Wicked” composer Stephen Schwartz.

My Viennese spies say it’s sensational.

It’s called “Schikaneder,” and while the title doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue, one source’s description is enticing: “It’s ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ meets ‘Amadeus’ with a score as lush and melodic as Stephen’s ‘The Baker’s Wife.’ This a major show.”

Do You Have A Song Stuck In Your Head?

They have done a scientific research, and here's how you can get rid of that tune that's stuck in your head.

The trick, it seems, is to solve puzzles -- sudoku, for example. But by far the most effective puzzle was five-letter anagrams.

The reason for this, the researchers say, is that puzzles engage the brain just enough. The abstract from the study "Going Gaga: Investigating, Creating and Manipulating the Song Stuck in My Head" states:
"The return of intrusive songs depended on cognitive resources: people reported that intrusive songs returned during low cognitive load activities, and we found that overloading the cognitive systems with challenging activities increased intrusive song frequency." 

So if I start humming "It's A Small World", you now know what to do.

Prince is Obsolete

The artist Prince, was the artist formally known as Prince (or as Rosie O'Donnell fondly called, much to his chagrin, TAFKAP), and now is back to Prince, thinks that internet music is 'dead'.

Prince is currently set to release his latest album, “20Ten,” for free through various European print media, including the Daily Mirror and its Scottish affiliate, the Daily Record. Fans can snag their copy this Saturday via the different press outlets, but you they certainly won’t find any of the new material online.

Prince has banned both YouTube and iTunes from using his music, calling the web obsolete.

“The Internet's like MTV,” he told the mirror. “At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you."

Anyone else caught the irony there? Filling your heads with numbers can't be that good for you, yet he called his latest album "20Ten"? What are those, oh honorable Prince? And his albums are going to be released on .... wait for it ..... CDs, which are encoded in digital bits!

You're right, Prince. Your music can't be that good for me.

Michael Buble on Graham Norton Show

There have been many amazing moments on Graham Norton show, but I think this has to rank as one of the top. Michael Buble's appearance on it was very funny and enjoyable. But he capped it off with an amazing performance of his tune "Haven't Met You Yet".





It will hard to top this one. I still watch these two videos regularly even this was from Fall of 2009. Michael Buble is one amazing performer.

OK, you have to have noticed this too and hung on to the back of your head. I'm sure you've heard Cutting Crew's "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight". If not, here's a music video of the tune:



Now, didn't the vocalist actually said "Moost have been.... "? I know more than a few people who swear that that was what he sang! :)

Flanders Recorder Quartet

This past Saturday, I attended a performance by the Flanders Recorder Quartet as part of the Arts At Argonne series. I've never attended a recorder performance before, so it was unusual. I also had this vision of the typical recorder that kids learn to play from and I don't mind admitting that I was a bit apprehensive that it is going to be just this monotonous recorder performance that would put me to sleep.

Well, slap me silly and call me a hollow stick! It was an astounding concert! First of all, the "recorder" appears to have many different siblings, and they all sounded differently from one another, very much like a string quartet. Secondly, the performance also had such a huge range of repertoire, from pre-Baroque era to modern avant garde incorporating various traditional sounds of Africa and South America.

I'm a sucker for ancient music. So when they played per-Baroque, even as far back as the 14th Century, music, that's right up my alley. But what is interesting about the concert was that, due to the intimate nature of the concert hall, the performers had time to describe the music and the history of the evolution of the instrument - the recorder - to the audience. They brought, and used, a large range of instrument, ranging from small, piccolo-type recorder, to this huge big-boy of a recorder that's roughly 7 feet tall and makes a very deep sound. It was a feast for the eyes and ears.

It was a tremendous concert. If you have a chance to attend one of the Flanders Recorder Quartet performance, I highly recommend it. I also immediately brought a couple of their CDs and am delightfully listening to it.

I hope the Arts at Argonne concert series survive. They have to cut back severely on their program due to funding cuts. Now, they can't even put out their program for the year due to lack of funding. So I was more than happy to support and attend this concert. Still, I wish others feel the same way since the concert hall was not even hall-full for this performance. It will be sad if this series cannot be sustained. I can say without a single doubt that THE BEST classical music experience that I've ever, EVER, had, was at one of the Arts at Argonne concert. It was a performance by I Solisti di Venezia a few years ago. I still fondly remember it to this day, and just the thought of the encore performance alone that they gave caused the hair on the back of my neck to stand up.
